Interview: Alexya, Chicana-Indie Star on the Rise
Alexya (Alexya Garcia) is a Los Angeles based entertainer whose passion for music, dancing, and community has her on the journey to being the next Chicana-indie music star. Alexya was a part of Fabulous Girls, a girl group founded and managed by Master P, which threw Alexya on television (Disney’s N.B.T. with H.E.R. and Jasmine Sagginario), tours with Disney Channel stars, and into her journey of making her mark in music and the industry. This Chicana singer, dancer, and songwriter is on the rise with her latest releases “Sick of Love Songs” debuting on international radio and her most recent track, “We Can Get It”.
What led to you becoming an artist?
“At the age of 13, I was a signed professional dancer. The owner of the dance studio I was studying at threw me into a room in the middle of hip-hop to audition for a girl group. The audition was for a group managed by Master P and I sang some Rihanna song, probably “Unfaithful”, and the next thing I knew I was going to recording sessions with three other girls my age and getting ready to tour with Disney talent.”
What inspires your music?
“Sex, love, and politics, especially around BIPOC and allies within the music industry. I’ve been reading a lot about Xicanisma, or Chicana Feminism, and the history of LA, and now I find myself more inspired to tap into my Chicano roots when writing new music. “
Who are some of your influences?
“Selena Quintanilla and Janet Jackson are my favorite performers. Para siempre (forever). I also love vintage showgirls like Tongolele or Olga Breeskin, which is why I love Kali Uchis right now. She is chingona as f*ck and I love how she keeps that spirit alive.”
What are some of your favorite memories from your career?
“My favorite memory of my career would have to be when I filmed in East Los for my latest track “We Can Get It”. I grew up there on the weekends on Winter by Tepeyac or while my mom worked in DTLA and it sucks to see it get gentrified. So before it was completely different, my homies and I spent the day there, filmed our project, and just enjoyed that good LA culture, you know? But the community responded! We talked to a lot of people who were curious and down with what we were doing and supported me as a singer. Some of the neighbors were offering us food or drinks or would just watch and support from the stoops with their beers enjoying their Saturday. . . This day really fired me up to keep going.”
What have been some of the greatest challenges of your career?
“Last year, I really had a bitter taste from the marginalization of women in this music industry, and was surprised that it was all done behind fake “wokeness”. I wasn’t surrounded by the right people, and the feeling of being gaslit and isolated was tough because I couldn’t validate my experience until I had talked about it. And my confidence is still recovering from that, but sabes que, I am game.”
Which of your songs/eps or albums is your favorite? Why is it your favorite?
“My favorite track that is out is “Sick of Love Songs”. I wrote that song so quickly, the alignment was there, everything was clear, and the recording session was very healing for me. It was the first time my own music made me feel better without me being critical that I am the one singing it. And the video is bomb! Shout out to the animator Joseph Le. But my next release is my favorite, to be honest; it feels very me, my man, and LA.”
What are you most excited to bring to your fans in the next year?
“MERCH BABY. I got this new track and I am having the pleasure to work with all-around creative mujeres to bring the vision of my sound to something you can wear. Also inspired by sex, love, and politics.”
What are your goals for this upcoming year?
“My goal is to be unapologetically myself. Through music, my vision, my voice, who I choose to be around . . . I just want to be honest with listeners and those I get to exchange with. And with being myself, also means pushing out a total of six releases. So boom, that is my year.”
How can your fans best support you right now?
“Mi gente! Stream and share por favor! Any and all of my music on all music streaming platforms. Send to mama, papa, your compas, and the cousins obviously. Spread the word. Until my team and I get our stride back with live performances, it’s an easy way for me to connect to who’s getting down with the get down.”
