Interview: Ann-Britt
Ann-Britt is a singer-songwriter based in California whose journey in music began in her native Denmark. From an early age, she discovered her passion for singing, becoming a soloist in the Danish church and later performing her favorite songs at renowned venues, including the world-famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.
Since being diagnosed with a chronic illness in 2018, Ann-Britt has channeled her experiences into writing heartfelt ballads and easy-listening songs. Music has since become her lifeline. Now, fulfilling a childhood dream, Ann-Britt is thrilled to release her debut album, Another Way, and is eager to share her music with the world.
What inspires your music?
That's a good question. I've loved singing and listening to music since I was a child. I sang in Denmark with the Danish Church and at Tivoli Gardens. When I moved to California I recorded an album of standards and was singing gigs around the Coachella Valley until I got sick in 2018. That's when one of my musician friends, Sergio Villegas, suggested I write songs about the emotions I was going through in dealing with a chronic illness. Being more or less housebound, I used the time to learn to play the piano. I also picked up the ukulele, guitar, and flute, but the piano has been the most important instrument in my songwriting. It turns out having everything taken away from you, including food and water, is great inspiration for writing songs.
Who are some of your influences?
So many, but the ones that spring to mind are Sarah McLachlan, Nora Jones, Eva Cassidy, Sara Bareilles, Sting, Ed Sheeran, Jewel, Joni Mitchell, the Norwegian singer Sissel, and the Danish singers Søs Fenger and Anne Linnet.
What are some of your favorite memories from your career?
I was invited to perform at a singer/songwriter contest in California to come up with an anthem for victims of sex trafficking. I chose my song Butterfly, which I wrote when I was in my darkest hour, coming to grips with the struggles of a chronic illness. I didn't know it then, but the song is really for anyone dealing with a misfortune that is not of their own making. This performance gave me confidence and validation that it's not too late to make my dreams come true and to keep writing. After the performance, I was featured in an article in the local paper.
Which of your projects do you love the most?
I love all of my songs because they come from such an emotional time in my life. But Another Way has a special place in my heart. Originally written for my two young adult children, it has become my personal anthem and message to the world. No matter what obstacles you face, there is always Another Way.
Who are some of the collaborators who helped you create your favorite works?
