AEA RIBBON MIC REVIEW
Last week we visited the lovely AEA team at their headquarters in Pasadena, CA for a behind-the-scenes tour of their facilities with Artist Relations / Sales Manager Jimmy Hua. We got a first hand look at how their mics are carefully crafted and assembled by their team of engineers. Jimmy surprised us with a box full of beautiful ribbon mics to take on a test drive for our upcoming recording session with The Strayngers. This surprise came at a great time as we prepared for a 3 day studio lockdown to culminate the tracking session for The Strayngers upcoming album, “I Don’t Know.”
Our experience with the microphones was exciting and at times experimental! Ribbon microphones were the best choice for our task in hand which consisted of recording electric guitars and vocals. We experimented with several mic combinations and different positioning techniques which as a result captured amazing tones and interesting textures that worked seamlessly with the style and character of the music we were crafting. Below is a summary of 4 different microphone models we used and our experiences working with them.
FEATURED: THE STRAYNGERS WRAP UP RECORDING SESSION FOR THEIR NEW ALBUM, “I DON’T KNOW” AT SGR.
The Strayngers’ forthcoming debut album “I Don’t Know,” is an introspective voyage through life and love. The record is a romantic quarrel yearning for the past from the future and the future from the past. Together, the songs create a whimsical roller coaster ride that travels back and forth from the deepest depths of despair and distress to the highest heights of hope and happiness. Conceptualized by the band’s founder Shane Tanksley, through the inescapable influence of millennial survival, “I Don’t Know” is the congenial quandary and enigmatic exposé that sets the stage for the fate of the future, and all that is to be learned from what lies ahead.
A couple of months ago The Strayngers began pre-production for their first studio album. Lead singer Shane Tanksley, Guitarist Sergio Galindo, Drummer Vicente Manzano and Bassist Jesse Silgero took on the task of laying down basic tracks (Drums and Bass) which would turn into the foundation of a great album.
This weekend The Strayngers had a 3 day lockdown with Producers/Engineers Alexis Rodriguez and Sergio Galindo to finish the recording of the new material. The band and producers worked furiously for 3 days on creating rich sounding tones, psychedelic textures, and capturing great performances. Prior to the session, AEA graciously lent us several ribbon mics to take for a spin. Lookout for the AEA mic review May 24th!

FEATURED: SILVER GUN RECORDS TOURS LEGENDARY RIBBON MICROPHONE COMPANY ‘AEA’ IN PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
Silver Gun Records team was invited by Jimmy Hua and Paul Pegas to visit the AEA headquarters in Pasadena, CA. Jimmy showed us around the AEA HQ which is comprised of a recording studio with analog vintage gear, an impressive mic museum featuring rare vintage mics (one of the mics from the museum included Les Paul’s original RCA ribbon mic that he modified himself with the stocking of his bride!), a mic assembling / production room, and the shipping room which also functions as the live room for the studio.
We got to meet some of the engineers from the assembly room and they shared some stories and knowledge of the legendary handmade ribbon mics. It was very impressive to see how these fine pieces of equipment are carefully crafted and assembled. It was great getting to meet the people that make up their company which has an undeniable family feel and strong foundation.
AEA lended engineers Alexis Rodriguez and Sergio Galindo a box full of mics to demo over the weekend while recording the THE STRAYNGER’S new album. Lead singer Shane Tanksley believes the microphones will be perfect for the task of “recording a psych-rock band that is trying to achieve a vintage idea with a modern tone.” Stay tuned for reviews to follow the session.
“Life is like a box of mics, you never know what your gonna get.” -Alexis Rodriguez
